SECTION A:
COMPREHENSION
Read
the following extract carefully then answer the questions that follow:
In may Africans societies girls are forced to get married at a very
early age some when they are only eight years old! The parents force their
daughters into marriages so as to get dowries. Another reasons is the fear that
their daughter would be pregnant before they are legally married. It is
considered shameful to the parents for a girl to be pregnant out of wedlock.
Early marriages put girls at great risk. At their early age the
girls are physically not matured enough to become mother. Early marriages also
result into early and frequent child births leading to large families. Forced
early marriages also deny girls the right to the enjoy their child hood plays,
the right to education and the right to choose husbands they love and of their
own age group. When girls are forced to marry men who are older than themselves
and out of their choices, they are likely to become widows at an early age.
After husbands have died the young widows are left to take care of the children
themselves or to remarry
African customs and traditions do not allow young wife to inherit
her husband’s property. Most of the customs deny women the right to own
property.
Others factors that forces girls to engage in sexual relations
white they are young are unequal power relations and economic hardships. Girls
who came from poor families engage in dangerous early sexual affairs resulting
into unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases in duding HIV/AIDS.
