COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARY
1.
Read the passage below then answer questions that follow after it. (05
marks)
Many people think that eating food is simply something
which is pleasant and necessary to satisfy hunger. They do not realize that a
great deal of their ill health is due to the wrong kinds of food. The reason
for this is that they do not know enough about what food is for.
In many parts of the world, notably in certain Asian
countries, there is much starvation and many people die each year because they
eat insufficient food. In these countries, the main problem is the low
production of food. In East Africa, however, starvation and prolonged hunger
are not as common as in Asia, because in most areas the climate and soil allow
the people living there to produce enough food for their needs.
A person belonging to a family in which hunger is
unknown finds it difficult to realize that some of his relatives may be ill
because of something lacking in their diet. But food is necessary not only to
satisfy hunger, but also to provide the body with certain substances to keep it
healthy. Ill health due to a poor diet is known as malnutrition. In East
Africa, malnutrition is due not to lack of food, but to lack of knowledge about
food and solution to the problem lies in the spreading of this knowledge.
It is important for people to realize that
malnutrition causes a great deal of illness and death. Moreover, apart from the
people who are obviously ill, there are many thousands who are tired or weak,
or poorly developed bodies, simply through lack of proper feeding. These people are far more likely to get
common diseases such as tuberculosis, infections, diarrhea than those with a
good diet, and they do not recover from them quickly.
It is extraordinary how many people are unaware of the
serious problem of malnutrition in their country. Many people are surprised
when they see a case, or a photograph of a case, of a common nutritional
disease, kwashiorkor, saying that they never realized it existed or how
horrible it was. Malnutrition is most common and severe in children under five
years of age, and women of child-bearing age. It has been going on for years
and is likely to become more widespread as more and more people go to live in
big towns, and cease to grow their own food.
People tend to think that the problem of malnutrition
is something for doctors or the Ministry of Health to solve. It is true that
medical staffs are necessary to cure diseases due to malnutrition, but the
solution is not cure but prevention. Because nutrition is a wide subject, the
prevention of malnutrition needs a wide attack by people trained in many
different branches of knowledge. It needs the co-operation of people from
several ministries working in very different fields. Thus, the medical man, by
examining patients, becomes aware of what faults there are in diet of people
living in a certain area, community or family.
The agricultural officer knowing theses faults can
attempt to increase the production of certain foods. The home economist or
domestic science teacher can demonstrate and advise people on how best to
prepare these foods. Above all, the teacher can instruct people about food and
nutrition. However, although education
perhaps holds the key to the solution, it is vital to realize that the problems
are best solved by team-work: by people in quite different jobs co-operating
with one common aim in view.

Summarise the passage below in not more than 120 words
(05 Marks)
As
what geographers have estimated, about twenty percent of the earth’s surface is
occupied by deserts . A majority of us view deserts as one unique kind of
landscape areas with little or no rainfalls. In actual fact, there are
differences between deserts, though in varying degrees. While it is common for
laymen like us to see deserts as rocky or covered with gravel or pebbles, there
are some where large sand dunes inhabit. Despite the fact that rainfall is
minimal, temperature do change in deserts ranging from seasonal ones to daily
changes where extreme hotness and coldness are experienced in the day and night.
Unfavourable
conditions in the deserts especially the lack of water have dicouraged many
living things from inhabiting these landscape. Nevertheless, there are
exceptionally surviving ones which through their superb tactics, have managed
to live through and are still going strong. One such kind is the specialist
annual plants which overcome seasonal temperature changes with their extremely
short, active life cycles. In events of sudden rain, the palant seeds pollute
and grow very quickly to make full use of the rain water. Their flowers bloom
and set seeds that ripen quickly in the hot sun too. Once the water runs dry,
the mother plant dies, leaving behind the drought-resistant seeds waiting
patiently for the next rainy season to
arrive.
The
cacti, a native in American desert adapts to the dry surroundings by having
unique body structure. The plant has swollen stems to help store water that
carries it through months. By having sharp pines instead leaves, water loss
through respiration is minimized, besides, these pointed pines also help the
plant ward off grazing animals, thus enhancing its survival period.
Besides
plant, there are also animals with distinct surviving tacticts in deserts too.
For instance, Skinks (desert lizard) metabolize stored fats in their bulbous
tails, producing water to supplement their needs just like what camels do with
the stored food in their humps during long journeys through deserts. Antelopes
like the addax, have very low water needs and hebce are able to tolerate the conditions
in deserts, extracting moistures from the food they eat.
Finally,
there are the sand grouses (desert birds) which do not have special feature to
overcome the drought-like nature in deserts. Hence, to survive in these hot,
dry deserts, they need to spend a large part of their time flying in search of
waterholes.

SAMPLE SUMMARY (05 Marks)
Despite the dry condition in the
deserts, some plants and animals still manage to survive there. One of them is
the specialist annual plants. Their short life cycles allow them to germinate,
grow and produce seeds during short rainy seasons. These seeds re
drought-resistant and are able to wait for the next rainy season before
starting their life cycles again. The cacti adapts to the dry weather by having
swollen stems for water storage and pine-like leaves to minimize water loss
through respiration. Skinks generate water from stored fats in their tails and
antelopes which require very little water, survive in deserts by extracting
water from food they eat. Finally, and grouse with no adaptive features turn to
waterholes constantly for help.
NB: Any relevant summary should be taken
into consideration.
